Coffee Table Mags pick

For outdoor readers — bikepacking, skiing, surfing, skateboarding and environmental stories, with Chris Burkard, GRLSWIRL and adventures from Alaska to Türkiye.

New Mountain is an independent British outdoor magazine telling personal stories about adventure, exploration and different ways of spending time outside.

Issue 04 brings together stories from across outdoor culture. Photographer Chris Burkard shares his new rules of adventure storytelling, while Josh Conroy and friends cross Türkiye’s Kaçkar Mountains by bike using satellite imagery rather than a predetermined route.

Christoph Johann returns to Alaska for a portfolio of backcountry ski photography, and Jonny Parker runs, surfs and fishes his way around Cornwall’s 300-mile coastline. “Girls Trip” follows six women spending 20 days immersed in the polar wilderness of north-west Svalbard.

Elsewhere, the magazine meets Lucy Osinski, co-founder of global skate community GRLSWIRL, visits Neza Peterca and her one-of-a-kind mountaineering gear, traces the history of Suunto and joins ELLIKER for a moth-trapping workshop. Environmental stories range from highlining in Iceland and changing glaciers in the Swiss Alps to connections between forests and oceans in Japan.

The cover reaches back to 1984, with George Sturtevant’s photograph of CJ Sturtevant flying at Tiger Mountain, Washington. Now approaching 80, she is still flying — a story New Mountain uses as a reminder to keep doing the things you love rather than worrying about what you are supposed to do.

About New Mountain
Founded by designer and editor Izzy Wedderburn, New Mountain Magazine is an independent outdoor publication built around author-led essays, photography and interviews. Rather than focusing only on extreme achievements, it explores the many ways people connect with nature through sport, travel, creativity, community and environmental stories.
