Fare Magazine – Issue 20: Amsterdam

Fare is a biannual independent magazine exploring one city at a time through food, history, people and local culture.

Issue 20 turns its attention to Amsterdam, exploring the city beyond its familiar postcard image through the people, places and food cultures that shape everyday life. Built on centuries of trade and migration, Amsterdam emerges here as a city of canals and creativity, but also of strong opinions, layered histories and remarkably diverse communities.

Fare is an independent biannual magazine devoted to one city per issue. Rather than functioning as a conventional travel guide, it combines essays, interviews, photography and illustration by local contributors to create a lasting portrait of a place through food, history and community.

Inside Issue 20, the magazine visits one of Amsterdam’s remaining traditional sandwich bars for halfom, kroketten and ossenworst; shares a home-cooked Surinamese vegetarian roti lunch; explores the Rijksmuseum’s celebrated art-history library; and crosses the IJ for seafood in one of Noord’s converted industrial spaces.
