For the cultural enthusiast

A new title ‘for the cultural enthusiast’, Enthousiasmos is the brainchild of film directors Roman Coppolla and Johan Chiaramonte, each issue inviting readers into the inner lives of a particular individual of cultural or artistic significance.

With its smooth calligraphic masthead and mix of retro kitschy collaged graphics, it's a stylised and nostalgia-soaked debut, not least because things kick off with Italian director Luca Guadagnino, whose in-depth interview inspires a number of the pieces that follow—on his three formative film experiences (Lawrence of Arabia, Apocalypse Now and Jason and the Argonauts), Italian colonial architecture in Ethiopia, a stollen recipe, and of course, a reflection on Call Me By Your Name.

As for the title, allow Coppolla and Chiaramonte to explain: ‘From the Greek enthousiasmos, enthusiasm captures better than any other word that sense of exaltation that overwhelms us during new encounters, conversations, discoveries and other magic moments. And because enthusiasm is contagious, this magazine will set out to meet personalities and artists who inspire us, to better ask ourselves what inspires them.’

This first issue celebrates the multi-talented Italian filmmaker Luca Guadagnino (Call Me by Your Name, Challengers, Suspiria...).

In a long and fascinating interview with Roman Coppola and Johan Chiaramonte, he takes us on a journey mixing childhood memories, cinema, art, and gastronomy.

Enthousiasmos will draw on this interview to explore these different topics. By letting us into his world, Luca Guadagnino gives us the best possible start to this adventure and reveals a whole new side of himself.

So sit back, warm up the coffee, make yourself at home.
