Elastic Magazine – No. 02: The Interspecies Issue

Elastic is an independent magazine of psychedelic art and literature, expanding the idea of psychedelia beyond its familiar visual clichés.

No. 02, “The Interspecies Issue”, explores the porous boundaries between the self and other living things. Across art and writing, the issue moves through ecological grief, interdependence and the sometimes strange, sublime and solitary experience of being alive within a world shared by other species.

Fifty-two writers and artists contribute to the issue, including Kelly Link, Patricia Lockwood, Alexis Pauline Gumbs, Bhanu Kapil, Pemi Aguda, Daisy Hildyard, CAConrad, Josèfa Ntjam, Mu Pan, Barbara Takenaga and Qualeasha Wood. Their work ranges across fiction, poetry and essays to painting, photography and other visual forms.

Rather than treating humans and nature as separate subjects, the issue focuses on entanglement — the relationships between people, animals, plants and environments, and the instability of the boundaries we draw between them.

Founded by editor and publisher Hillary Brenhouse, Elastic is a magazine of psychedelic art and literature based in Montreal. It publishes writing and visual art that bend genre, time and perspective, with an emphasis on experimental forms and a broad understanding of contemporary psychedelic culture. Its debut issue won the 2026 CLMP Firecracker Award for Best Debut Magazine.
