The Sea in Your Heart,
A Borderless Sensation

What kind of place is Tokyo for surfers?
It's certainly not an area you'd go to just for surfing (the islands are an exception). On the other hand, it's actually one of the most populous areas in the country. It's easily accessible to Shonan, Chiba, Ibaraki, Shizuoka, and other areas, and with Haneda Airport nearby, it's a great location for trips to other regions and overseas.
...Hmm, but even with all those favorable conditions, I still feel like there aren't many surfers who say, "I live in Tokyo for surfing!" The majority of people probably have reasons for living there other than surfing, such as a connection to Tokyo or a hard-working job. That said, whether you're a native local or a newcomer, Tokyo is a place to return to, even without the sea. It's a beloved home. It goes without saying, but the feeling in Tokyo that "I love surfing, but there's more to it than that" runs quite deep. What's more, this same principle is shared by other cultures as well, as diverse cultures transcend barriers and interact endlessly, creating chaos and a driving force behind an indescribable excitement. While it is a culture that is deeply connected to nature, I think it has also shone as a stage where street art and art intersect. In fact, many surfers and artists who come from overseas say they want to go to Tokyo. They feel a vibe that can only be found here.
And so, here is Blue.'s first special feature on Tokyo. What does Tokyo mean to surfers? I think it's fine for the answers you encounter to be all different. That's part of who we are. And there's something I know without even asking: the ocean is always in my heart. Because I'm a surfer.
