The Vogue Living team returned to Milan this year for Salone del Mobile and as a first-time visitor, it was everything I had imagined—the energy, the vibrancy, the excitement in the air. The team and I have edited our very special coverage, starting on page 25, captured beautifully by long-time Vogue Living contributor Paul Barbera. It’s impossible to pick one single highlight but for me it wasn’t a particular installation or location or having the international design community coming together. It was seeing locals and their families engaged with design and appreciating creativity with keen interest and delight. Style and beauty is intrinsically woven into the very fabric of Italian culture and it did remind me that back home in Australia, there is the same fiercely passionate spirit in our own creative community of makers, design professionals and keen style aficionados.
After an exhilarating and exhausting time at Salone, Head of Brand Yeong Sassall and I enjoyed a relaxing weekend in Lake Como. We stayed at the beautifully renovated Mandarin Oriental, Lago di Como, spending a day at the incredible spa and underground wet room (which has mosaic mirrors, artfully placed on all walls and the ceiling to reflect the beauty of the lake so you are always surrounded by the truly breathtaking natural surroundings). While this issue does focus on inspiring Italian style, the local homes take centre stage. VL50 stars Flack Studio and YSG are real standouts, along with designer Tali Roth’s home in Melbourne. Each of their projects demonstrates an assured use of rich textures and colours, striking exploration of materiality and masterful edit of statement pieces and art, all elements that mirror the bold and brave Italian spirit of design. Viva Italia!
